Gutters (also named rain gutter or roof drain) are water rings which congregate running rain water at the eaves and deduce it through a socket/hopper and the down- or rainwater pipe. In roof drainage they are forced to avoid damages at the corresponding building as well as to prevent hurts of residents or road users. The first gutters were manufactured out of wood but because wood and water do not get along with each other well, stone was used as their material in antiquity and medieval. In the 18th century gutters out of metal got usual. They had the big advantage that they tighten and expand only slightly without doing harm. Criteria for the choice of material were established by original costs, persistence and visual appearance.
